New question type “Regular expression short answer” for quizzes

The question type “Short answer” for the RWTHmoodle quizzes is a half-open question type. Students enter a term or a short phrase into a text field, RWTHmoodle then compares the answer to the correct answer saved in the system. A problem with this question type are variants of the correct answer resulting from spelling variants, upper case and lower case, or different separators. With the standard short answers lecturers need to enter all variants manually. By contrast, the “Regular expression short answer” allows to combine all these variants in a regular expression. If the expected answer is “blue, white, red”, a different sequence of the colours or a differing set of the separators will also be accepted as corrected. A detailed manual with examples is available in the general Moodle help.
